Time to go green !

It has been a while since I last wrote. The environment is such a hot topic: ads, articles, new gadgets galore about CO2 emissions & what we can do to make a difference in the great scheme of things. I can't tell you what a relief it is to see that people have started to think & finally go GREEN.

We have come a long since the 90's when I would recycle paper from home & our community center: stuff tones of paper in my back pack, go to a drop off point in the neighborhood, by bike might I add, and of course get laughed at. Not that I cared, but I would be ticked off that people just did not get my sense of duty !

Then when, in 1995-96 the City of Montreal created the environmental program Eco-quartier & distributed green bins, I coordinated my neighborhood program. People actually asked me why we bother recycling Quebec is full of natural resources ! We have come a long way indeed !

Ever since Al Gore's documentary, An Inconvenient truth, has been released perhaps a greater sense of emergency has been emerging. It is clear that global warming is not just another of the earth's cyclical climate phases. Please watch it, you have not done so, here is the link to the website: http://www.climatecrisis.net/. Also please start living it up by going greener. Actions do speak louder than words.

So to act green, remember the famous 3Rs. By applying each R into your daily routine, you reduce CO2 emissions & poison our earth less.

The 3Rs : reduce, reuse & recycle = the foundation of living green
REDUCE waste & emissions by using public transportatin, consumption of packaged goods, toxic chemicals (anything from paint to cleaning agents ) using eco-friendly products to reduce toxic waste dumped into our water streams & soil.
Daily green act (dagrac):
Use eco-friendly products to reduce toxic waste dumped into our water streams & soil.
Buy products with the least amount of packaging.
Buy shopping bags to avoid using plastic bags for grocery shopping.
Bike it to work
Water plants very early in the morning or in the evening
Don't wash you sidewalk with a hose
Use AC (air conditionning) only when you are home
Plant trees ( to reduce CO2 in the air), this is why roof top gardens are IN.
REUSE what ever you can or give it to others or organisations that can make use of it...instead of throwing it out into the garbage, bring hazardous waste materials to municipal drop off points
...believe it or not some people still throw out everything !!!
Daily green act:
Reuse ziplocs (although we should use them very sparingly to begin with!) a few times before throwing them into the recycling bin. Use glass pyrex style containers to store food instead of zyplocs.
RECYCLE with your municipal green or blue bins, this act alone reduces your garbage volume by 1/3...you may reduce it by another 1/3 by composting...then use your compost as a natural fertiliser.
Daily green act:
You can't imagine the various types of organisations that recycle anything from bicycles, clothes, toys, rags to computer parts...so just make a little effort to find who does what in your community.

The environment has been a passion of mine for a long time. I actually gave up a position at the hospital as a dietician to work for Montreal's green program...it was my dream to see recycling bins in Montreal ...can't believe that was 12 years ago & it became reality !

Will be back with more on this topic...have done your Dagrac today ? Go for it !
A passionetly green Nutri Cel
