Eating Fish is Fishy Business

To eat or not to eat fish...now there is a confusing question ! Why is it so?

Contaminants is the answer : mmmm...yummy... mercury, PCBs, dioxins or pesticides found in high levels in a large variety of fish, usually big ones... and yes, they are neurotoxic and carcinogenic.

Recommendations for fish consumption are unclear however the
Institute of Medicine recommended the following in 2006 :

- to eat a variety of fish to limit consumption of one particular type of contaminant ;
- to limit two 3-ounce servings of oily fish servings per week but no more than 12 ounces per week for women in childbearing years and young children:
-to limit Albacore (white) to 6 ounces per week.
-to avoid shark, swordfish, tilefish and king mackerel especially by childbearing women and young children.

For an extensive list of fish to consume refer to www.seachoice.org

According to this guide, some of the safest fish choices (mainly farmed varieties which by the way have their own set of problems) are:
- catfish, Pacific cod, herring, pollock, sardines, trout

Why bother eating fish any way?

Fish are a great source of lean protein + they supply an essential fatty acid called omega 3's which has cardiovascular benefits as well humor enhancing benefits...so you may want to complement your diet with fish oil. I personally recommend to consume any kind of fish 1x/week no more than 3 ounces or 90g, the equivalent of one average palm of hand and definetly supplement your diet with fish oil ie Omega 3 capsules !

More on omega 3s next time. Have a great week !

Be picky with your produce

If going completely organic is not an option for you, you should continue reading this.....

Do you want to reduce your exposure to harmful pesticides by almost 90%? You can if you choose your produce properly.

Analysts at the non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) have developed a list of 43 fruits and vegetables that are ranked according to their pesticide load (from highest to lowest). This is based on the results of nearly 43,000 tests for pesticides on produce collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. FDA between 2000 and 2004.

They have shown that by avoiding the top twelve most contaminated fruits and vegetables (or buying those organic), people can lower their pesticide exposure by almost 90%!
-Eating the 12 most contaminated on the list will expose a person to some 15 pesticides per day, on average.
-Eating the 12 least contaminated ones will expose them to less than 2 pesticides per day.

So here are the top six to AVOID (or buy organic):
-peaches,
-apples,
- sweet bell peppers,
-celery,
-nectarines
- strawberries.
And the six BEST choices are:
-onions,
-avocado,
-frozen sweet corn,
- pineapples,
- mango and
-asparagus. Please follow the link to see the complete list. www.foodnews.org

You can make healthier choices not only by eating a well balanced diet, but also by buying organic when possible to reduce exposure to potentially harmful pesticides.

Always with your best interest at heart,

Doc Taline

Time to go green !

It has been a while since I last wrote. The environment is such a hot topic: ads, articles, new gadgets galore about CO2 emissions & what we can do to make a difference in the great scheme of things. I can't tell you what a relief it is to see that people have started to think & finally go GREEN.

We have come a long since the 90's when I would recycle paper from home & our community center: stuff tones of paper in my back pack, go to a drop off point in the neighborhood, by bike might I add, and of course get laughed at. Not that I cared, but I would be ticked off that people just did not get my sense of duty !

Then when, in 1995-96 the City of Montreal created the environmental program Eco-quartier & distributed green bins, I coordinated my neighborhood program. People actually asked me why we bother recycling Quebec is full of natural resources ! We have come a long way indeed !

Ever since Al Gore's documentary, An Inconvenient truth, has been released perhaps a greater sense of emergency has been emerging. It is clear that global warming is not just another of the earth's cyclical climate phases. Please watch it, you have not done so, here is the link to the website: http://www.climatecrisis.net/. Also please start living it up by going greener. Actions do speak louder than words.

So to act green, remember the famous 3Rs. By applying each R into your daily routine, you reduce CO2 emissions & poison our earth less.

The 3Rs : reduce, reuse & recycle = the foundation of living green
REDUCE waste & emissions by using public transportatin, consumption of packaged goods, toxic chemicals (anything from paint to cleaning agents ) using eco-friendly products to reduce toxic waste dumped into our water streams & soil.
Daily green act (dagrac):
Use eco-friendly products to reduce toxic waste dumped into our water streams & soil.
Buy products with the least amount of packaging.
Buy shopping bags to avoid using plastic bags for grocery shopping.
Bike it to work
Water plants very early in the morning or in the evening
Don't wash you sidewalk with a hose
Use AC (air conditionning) only when you are home
Plant trees ( to reduce CO2 in the air), this is why roof top gardens are IN.
REUSE what ever you can or give it to others or organisations that can make use of it...instead of throwing it out into the garbage, bring hazardous waste materials to municipal drop off points
...believe it or not some people still throw out everything !!!
Daily green act:
Reuse ziplocs (although we should use them very sparingly to begin with!) a few times before throwing them into the recycling bin. Use glass pyrex style containers to store food instead of zyplocs.
RECYCLE with your municipal green or blue bins, this act alone reduces your garbage volume by 1/3...you may reduce it by another 1/3 by composting...then use your compost as a natural fertiliser.
Daily green act:
You can't imagine the various types of organisations that recycle anything from bicycles, clothes, toys, rags to computer parts...so just make a little effort to find who does what in your community.

The environment has been a passion of mine for a long time. I actually gave up a position at the hospital as a dietician to work for Montreal's green program...it was my dream to see recycling bins in Montreal ...can't believe that was 12 years ago & it became reality !

Will be back with more on this topic...have done your Dagrac today ? Go for it !
A passionetly green Nutri Cel

In response to a concerned reader by Chiro Paul

I would like to take this opportunity to respond to our physician reader who had concerns about manipulating children. I want to start off by saying that any sort of therapy carries risks. Even taking medication can be lethal. We can't say that manipulation is bad and forget about it. It has its own place in healthcare. Chiropractors are highly trained professionals and practice rigorously before they open their clinics.

Manipulation of the spine of a baby does not involve twisting nor forceful maneuvers. In fact it is a very gentle touch with the tip of the index finger. In order to have an idea, the force that is used is like keying in the numbers on a phone pad. So it is extrememy gentle. Any mother who has been to a chiro can vouch for that. In fact, the process of birth in itself is a lot more traumatizing and forceful than a chiropractic adjustment. That image will put things in perspective for you. Our spine is not as fragile as we think!
Every time we hear a story about something that has gone wrong, we have to make sure that we have the facts straight. Often we hear about out of the ordinary events through the media. Don't forget that the media want to sell and that's all they care about. Therefore they are not our best source of information.
There are always contraindications to adjustments. Meaning, certain people are not good candidates for manipulations. We test for that and proceed accordingly. We are highly trained professionals and go through 5 years of chiropractic schooling. We know our limits and we know who we can and who we cannot or should not treat.
Millions of people get adjusted every day in thousands of clinics around the world. Yet we rarely hear about serious accidents. Statistically speaking, in the medical world that is very safe.
Every time we consult a health care professional we have to go to someone with experience. In the health care world that plays a big role. Ask for references every time you or relatives or friends consult a health care professional.
I hope I demystified the world of chiropractic a little and for any questions PLEASE do not hesitate to ask and raise concerns.
Dialogue and communication will help us understand each other.

On a more personal note: My baby's chiropractic experience

On a more personal note regarding chiropractic manipulation & babies, our experience was thankfully positive. My daughter was a week old when Chiro Paul made a house call (because I was too chicken to drive my car anywhere with my tiny little baby). He gently moved his finger from one point to the next strategic point to feel points of tension on my baby. There were perhaps 5 such points he verified & that was it.
As Doc Taline pointed out, one needs to really know the credentials of health professionals we deal with, whoever they are (physicians, acupuncturists, chiropractors, massotherapists etc).
In our case, I fully trusted Chiro Paul because he had helped me prior to my pregnancy by adjusting me weekly. During my pregnancy, although I have very frail back, he helped me prevent backaches. The only thought I have is to verify the healthcare professionals track record...Hope you find a wonderful chiro too !
