Breast is Best

So, are some of you thinking..."I have enough things to worry about! I don't need to hear about mutated produce or toxic chemicals leaching from my baby's bottle!"
Well, ignorance is bliss of course. However, wouldn't you rather have the power of knowing what's really out there and having some control over your body?
I think the industry relies on the fact that people either aren't informed or if they are, won't bother to change anything because it's too much effort or too expensive.

Well, we need to change that!

I may not have a solution to everything but one suggestion does pop up in my head!
Baby bottles don't have to be a concern....in fact they don't have to BE at all!
Why use bottles when you can use your breast!!

Give your baby the best nutrition and a great start to a healthy body, mind and soul!
There is NOTHING that even comes close to breastmilk; and the companies that claim that their formula is the "closest thing to nature" are lying to you! Depending on the brand of formula, some list corn syrup solids as the second ingredient.
Your breastmilk is made for your baby. It has exactly what your baby needs including the vitamins, the omega fats (crucial for brain development) and the antibodies (to help protect her from infections). It's sterile and at the right temperature. It will make your baby smarter, healthier and more secure as an individual.

The benefits are great for mom as well - it's a wonderful bonding experience, helps you lose weight, and protects against breast and ovarian cancer, as well as osteoporosis. And think of all the money you'll save!

I should also mention that breastfeeding is great for the environment....imagine sparing our planet of all the ecological waste created from the production, packaging and shipping of millions of cans of formula!

Most new mothers do want to breastfeed but many lack the support to help them either initiate or continue breastfeeding. What upsets me the most are individuals within the health profession who could make the difference but just don't. If you feel that your physician is not totally supportive of breastfeeding please seek help elsewhere!

For all you mommies-to-be who want to breastfeed, there is help out there - you just need to ask! You can call La Leche League or your local clinic/clsc and ask for a list of lactation consultants in your area or mothers with experience who can offer help/support. They are usually very good and most will do house calls.

There are a lot of myths out there about breastfeeding, a lot of false information that discourage women. Here on our blog, we can help answer your questions and offer support.
I would also invite experienced moms to share their stories and offer advice as well.

Remember, positive attitude and intention to breastfeed are pivotal (with the proper education and support of course!) for success!

After all, doesn't every mother want to give their baby the very best?

I would like to add my personal experience. I made the decision to breastfeed my children because I felt intuitively and instinctively that this is the ONLY way to go. The bottle (plastic nipple) felt so unnatural.

I am a very active woman, who works full-time, has two children (one in Grade 1), and I am involved in the community. Let's just say I am a type "A" personality! Breastfeeding let me sit down, relax and "bond" with my children. It slowed me down, and I am so greatful that I did.

The speed in which we live is not at a normal rate. Our children need us to physically and mentally be there for them - so breastfeeding taught me that.

It also taught me to be inspired when I introduced different foods to them. Healthy meals takes time and patience to prepare – so does breastfeeding.

Take the time. Be patient. Get support. It's so worth it. Now for your children and later for you!

Good luck!
Elize - Type "A" woman.
